The ideal space is about 4m x 4m (13ft x 13ft) and has a ceiling height of about 3m, is capable of being totally blacked out, and has a narrow entrance door, ideally with a connecting corridor.
In addition, although this is not essential, the space is ideally part of a disused industrial site. The work was originally planned and conceived in an underground concrete bunker-like space with white formica walls, rusted industrial machinery hanging from the roof, and some rusted and partly broken plumbing and tubing lining parts of the walls and the ceiling; access was through a poorly-maintained service entry and along a corridor lit with utilitarian fluorescent lighting. These aesthetics are designed to give viewers a sense they are coming to experience something raw, outside of carefully designed public reality and normally hidden from view.
I install a camera and an infrared light-source in the ceiling of this room, pointing down at the floor, and run the image into my laptop. The laptop sends out sound for an amplifier and speakers and control signals for a custom lighting rig. The custom lighting rig consists of five modules that can be installed anywhere in the space.
I supply the camera, infrared light source, laptop, custom lighting rig, and all cables necessary to power and operate these.
I require:
Sound
- 1x 50W-100W amplifier
- 2x mono DI box with ground lift
- 2x good quality speakers
- 1x subwoofer
Power
230-250V 10A AC, single supply. Lights operate on DC power so are low-power consumption and safe for the public.
Additional requirements
- time – needs one full day to set up and test.
- some way of attaching a security-type camera and an infrared light source to the roof of whatever space is in use – usually this bit can be improvised with bits of wood or just drilling directly into the roof.
- ladder, screwdriver, drill, tools, etc. for installation.
