A bit of techno in 5/4 written on old-school equipment in Bob Higher Intelligence Agency's studio in Birmingham. Thanks Bob, you're the best.

Interesting Fact: the kick drum is pushed so far behind the beat that it's a wonder the rhythm holds together at all. This is what gives this track that nice slightly lazy feeling.

Ars Electronica: some wicked pieces

Friday September 14th, 2007 at 9:58 am | research

Some links to some of my favourite pieces at Ars Electronica 2007:

  • Siren – Ray Lee
  • Feed – Kurt Hentschlager
  • Arabesque – Peter William Holden
  • @c + Lia – live performance (actually, the first ‘movement’ of their performance was much, much better than the second: the first part, especially the visuals, had a strong narrative structure)
  • Arrival – Shelley Eshkar (US) & Paul Kaiser (US). I loved this piece for, among other things, its presentation: it was a tabletop animation with headphones, in a quiet corner; and its soundtrack: when you put on the headphones the figures on the table really came to life. It brought back the reason I used to love playing Settlers II: the notion of this universe of little characters all endearingly running around doing things, completely oblivious to me as the observer, and again with great sound design.
  • Acting in Utopia – although only two of the pieces are mentioned on the Ars Electronica website I loved the entire upstairs area of the Landesgalerie Oberösterreich, because it was so playful and made me feel like I was a kid again.

probably more to come later…

This is the audio from a performance called A Cable Plays by Damian Stewart (frey, audio) and Chris Sugrue (video) at Ars Electronica 2007, part of Welcome to the City of the Real.

The performance was an interpretation of a game played between two on-stage performers using a pin-board and a ball of wool. Video tracking software followed the development of the game in real-time, and effects related to the progress of the game were overlaid on the video image, for projection. The audio in this recording was performed live to accompany the video. The whole performance lasted for about 7 minutes.

Austria/Ars Electronica performance

Saturday September 1st, 2007 at 4:15 am | participate

I am in Linz, with limited internet. If you need to, you can reach me on +44 7854 493 796, although it costs me to receive and I don’t think I have much credit left.

I’m here for the Ars Electronica festival. I’m performing A Cable Plays with Chris Sugrue as part of Welcome to the Jungle of the Real, on the opening night Wednesday the 5th of September, at Grand Cafe zum Rothen Krebsen & Institut für erweiterte Kunst, Obere Donaulände 11, 4020 Linz.

Hooray!
