globalised electronics manufacturing — experiences, anyone?

Does anyone have any experience working with electronics manufacturing contractors in Asia?

I’ve got some ideas for a series of electronic artworks that would involve mass-producing electronic devices, but I have no idea about what sort of prices I’d be looking at, or even how to begin to go about it.

I figure price-wise it mightn’t be prohibitively expensive — the local $2 shop is full of quite complex electronic devices that cost just $2, and that’s including retailing, resale, and shipping overheads. But some actual knowledge from someone who actually knows what they’re talking about wouldn’t go amiss…
